PERIOD 2 Mondays/Tuesdays 9:50 - 10:35am Thursdays 9:00 - 10:25am Fridays 10:20 - 11:00am The JAMS Symphony Orchestra offers instruction in intermediate ensemble techniques as well as individual musicianship skills. This ensemble performs as a string orchestra and the students will become familiar with standard string orchestra literature. It is recommended that the student provides his/her own instrument. Performances include the Fall and Spring Concerts as well as the 5th Grade Tour, the annual presentation for new incoming JAMS students. Weekly coaching sessions are provided for all sections of the Symphony Orchestra to supplement rehearsal instruction.

Prerequisites:
- At least two years previous string experience (or discretion of directors)
- Proficiency of the following major scales:
- C, G, D – one octave for all string instruments
- G – two octaves for violin
- C – two octaves for viola and cello
- Ability to judge basic intonation – flat, sharp
- Understanding of whole, half, quarter, eighth and dotted half rhythms
- Understanding of 4/4, 2/4, and 3/4 time signatures
- Basic sight-reading
- Private lessons recommended
- Grade level: 6 - 8
