TED-Ed Video: "How to Practice Effectively for Just About Anything"
Purposeful practice makes permanent!! To keep up with the rigors of each class, we recommend that students practice, or do some sort of musical activity (clapping and counting, practicing with the mouthpiece, or just fingering, etc.) on a DAILY basis outside of rehearsals. However, individual practice is most effective when a goal is established BEFORE practicing begins. Plan a strategy of how to achieve weekly improvement, which should include a quiet place to practice, and a music stand to promote good playing posture.
Students in ALL classes are required to submit a Daily Practice Goal (DPG)for each completed practice session. Aim for 5-7 DPGs per week for maximum benefits of practice! (Click HERE for the Practice Rubric.)
Need help with pacing your practice? Check out our "Practice Pacing Guide!" After establishing a goal for the week, use this guide to help you "map" each day to maximize the effectiveness of your practice sessions.
